Getting a traffic ticket while on vacation is never fun. Even less if you’re renting a car in Costa Rica, it’s important to know how to handle it properly. The good news? Paying your ticket is relatively straightforward—as long as you follow the right steps.
Where to Pay Your Ticket
If you receive a traffic citation, you’ll typically be required to pay it before returning your rental car. Many rental agencies will process the payment for you. Deduct the fine from your deposit or charge it directly to your account. However, one thing to remember—never pay a traffic officer directly. That’s considered a bribe, and bribing a public official is illegal in Costa Rica.
What Happens If You Don’t Pay?
Ignoring a traffic ticket in Costa Rica can have real consequences. One of the most surprising (and strictly enforced) penalties is that unpaid tickets can prevent you from leaving the country. Costa Rican immigration officials work closely with Tránsito (the traffic police). If your fine remains unpaid, you may be flagged when attempting to leave through the airport.
Discounts for Prompt Payment
If you made a mistake on the road and received a traffic ticket, you can save 15% on the fine by paying early. According to the MOPT (Ministry of Public Works and Transport), fines paid within the first 10 business days from the date they are officially recorded in the system qualify for this discount.
Important Reminders
- The 15% discount applies only to minor and mid-level infractions (Categories B, C, D, and E).
- Category A fines (the most serious ones) do not qualify for a discount. These currently cost around ¢368,000 (approximately $700).
- Traffic fines must be paid in full—there are no installment plans. However, if you have multiple fines, you can choose to pay them one at a time.
